Magazine Cover Analysis
The masthead of this magazine is ‘Allure’.
Allure is a beauty-centered magazine, whilst also covering other aspects of
life like wellness and shopping. This type of magazine targets woman,
especially with the beauty aspect which is reinforced through their covers. The
magazine includes soft, neutral colours of blue, white, gray and black. These
softer colours will also target a female audience. The cover includes 3 fonts,
with large text in the center of the cover and smaller text to the side. The
main image is of artist and actress, Ariana Grande, which will help to target
her fan base. The smaller text just under the masthead gives us her name; this
will once again help to target fans of her music and beauty products. The cover
line of ‘best of beauty turns 25’ will once again help to target her fans,
whilst also making it clear that this magazine is centered around her beauty
career, rather than her musical career. It includes the text ‘special issue’
above the masthead to reinforce it being exclusive, making people more likely
to buy it. To the right under the masthead, we can see Allure won an award for
best of beauty. This demonstrates to the audience that Allure is a
well-established magazine that will have the best beauty tips for its audience-
you can trust them. Her makeup in the image once again reinforces the beauty
aspect, helping to promote her own beauty line, Rem Beauty. This is shown with
a quote about Ariana, above the masthead saying, ‘now she’s bringing us both’
referring to her music and her new beauty line. This magazine will help to
promote her beauty products.
The masthead is ‘Vogue’, a well-known
lifestyle magazine that targets woman. It is presented in the classic Vogue
font, making it easy for fans of the magazine to recognize. The colour scheme is autumn colours; soft
browns, black and white-this is reinforced with the cover line to the left
‘autumn shake-up'. The main image is of Zendaya, a popular actress and singer
with a large fanbase, so this issue will target fans of her by having her in
the center. It also has her name in a large font towards
the bottom. The coverlines reinforce the lifestyle aspect, with one saying
‘cool coats, the boots and dresses to buy’ offering
the audience style advice for autumn. Another says ‘how to bio hack your
wellness’ this once again reinforces the lifestyle
aspect. Another coverline describes a story of a young mother who ‘rebuilds her
life after a coma’. This reinforces the personal
aspect, offering advice to the audience by sharing personal stories, linking to the magazine promoting well-being.
Zendaya is dressed glamorously, with soft neutral make-up linking to the autumn
colour scheme. The rings and the dress reinforce the simplicity of the look, but still portraying
glamour linking to her star power. The magazine uses 3 fonts, and all add to
the simplicity of the cover. Vogue is well-known for its classic, simple covers
that are easily recognizable even by non-fans.
The masthead of this magazine is
‘Cosmopolitan’, a fashion magazine which targets woman covering a range of
topics within. It often covers celebrity styles, which is shown with this
cover. The main image is of Sunghoon from a K-Pop boyband called Enhypen, this will help to target fans of this group but also
of the wider K-pop genre. Fans of this genre are mainly woman, linking to the
Cosmopolitan targeting woman within their magazines. The colour scheme is
black, gold and yellow, which are quite glamorous colours reinforced by the
gold dainty jewelry he is wearing. The only text and cover lines on the cover is his name and group name in the bottom right, in a
large text. This will once again help to target his and Enhypen’s fan base, by having it in a large text it is easy for fans
to recognize and for new fans to be intrigued. There are no coverlines featured
on the cover, possibly as the cover is mainly focusing on the artist himself
rather than what is actually included in the full
issue. A secondary target audience could be Asian people in general, as Asians
are often underrepresented within the media, and may feel represented through
this cover. There are two fonts shown on the cover, with his name being in a
large, eye-catching font which links the house style of the cover. The cover
focuses on presenting him glamorously, which may link to the singer’s personal
identity and style, drawing fans in.
